Tiahrt and House Ethics Probe

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Congressman Todd Tiahrt is currently under an ethics probe over earmarks and campaign contributions from the PMA Group.   This group has ties to Murtha and other prominent Democrats.

The Politico is reporting that these developments could seriously undermine Tiahrt's ability to compete in the GOP Primary.

Tiahrt later responded by saying the probe is overblown because he's followed the appropriate guidelines for earmark requests.

The question for our readers, does this probe seriously damage Tiahrt's candidacy?  Or will this go away?

What do you think?

Tiahrt's whole congressional career, not to mention his campaign is already a joke. Tiahrt doesn't represent Kansas, he represents an extremist bigoted right-wing fringe of the GOP.

Tiahrt is getting so desperate that he's betrayed the Republican Party. He went out of his way to endorse a candidate from another Party in NY's 23rd District. This is a time for Republicans to unite. The GOP can be home to someone that is, god forbid, pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. If the GOP does not open up, and become the "big-tent" then the Democrats will never lose power.

I really cannot understand how a sitting, elected Republican could betray his Party. Tiahrt is wrong for the GOP, he's wrong for Kansas. Moran all the way.

Tiahrt will drop out. He is down $2 Million in money, 16 points in the polls and an ethics investigation will halt everything. This is going to be the final blow to tiahrt's campaign.

Are you kidding me? Tiahrt's office was saying today that they are not under investigation and that their earmark process is totally above board. I'm wondering how many of you "Republicans" will have a little faith in our congressman? I think Tiahrt is a great legislator who has no ethics issues. His name on some leaked document means nothing. Have a little faith, people! This certainly doesn't mean he's dropping out of the Senate race... probably because he's the best candidate.

Todd Tiahrt will NOT drop out! What is Moran's group afraid of? As stated in the NYT (YES! the NYT) the 30 members who were mentioned in the probe most of the cases under review had already been rejected and unfounded eventhough the names had been made public - one being Todd Tiahrt.
Shame on Moran for jumping on the bandwagon and so quickly throwing Todd Tiahrt under the bus. Where was Moran's professional ethics that he could not have contacted Tiahrt to make sure the story was correct? Is Moran partnering with the Pelosi crowd? Is the US House afraid of a REAL Conservative? It is obvious that the LIBERALS are more comfortable with a milktoast like Jerry Moran. Makes one wonder?

I'm a conservative and I think Tiahrt is alright, but I have to ask why the heck is he still in this Senate race? Down in the polls, trumped in money and endorsements, and now we find out he's one of 2 House Republicans under an ethics investigation.

It's time for him to withdraw, maybe to return to the Fourth District and face off against Democrat Raj Goyle, who has a serious chance of winning that House seat.

Kansan voters don't react well to the taint of ethical problems. I urge Tiahrt to not put our party through an ugly primary that he won't win.

Ben's comment is interesting that Todd betrayed the Republican party. Todd actually supported the Conservative in the race. The republican in the race was more liberal than the democrat running. How is that betraying the Republican party? If supporting a conservative candidate is so bad, why did DeMint. James, as you you know, Todd is only trumped in money because Jerry carried over 2 million dollars since he never had a tough race. In addition, trumped in endorsements? First, endorsements will not carry a whole lot of weight in this race, but, if you want to talk about endorsements, being endorsed by John McCain and the 7 liberal mayors like Jerry was, is nothing to brag about. 8 reason's to vote against Jerry. Let's talk about the polls. A poll that we know is not accurate and even those inside SurveyUSA know this is not an accurate poll. Everybody knows that this will be a tight race. Todd won't drop out nor should he. He will be the next U.S. Senator. Anybody that thinks Todd should drop out because of the polls, endorsements, and money, is not astute enough about this race to truly understand what type of race this is. Let's talk about Jerry. Jerry is not a man of integrity or a man who is being honest. He has become "conservative" within that last year since his announcement to run for Senate. He is more moderate as is illustrated by his solicitation of John McCain and the 7 mayors. Let's not forget about his comment about how Obama is easier to work with than Bush. So, Obama is starting to listen to the conservative Republicans. Nope. He never has and he never will. Does Obama listen to the moderates. Yes. Makes you wonder more about Jerry doesn't it. Jerry's comments illustrate how moderate he is. What about Jerry sending out this Washington Post news article to all those on his campaign e-mail. First, we know that the information leaked was not correct, second, Jerry didn't have the respect or courage to wait to see what the outcome will be. The reason why Jerry did this is because he is not a man of honor or intergrity and quite frankly, he is scared of Todd. His internal polls illustrate he should be scared. But as we all know, there is in fact no investigation of Todd Tiahrt. Todd will be the next US Senator. He is an honest man who does not waiver from his beliefs and morals. He continues to fight the good fight regardless of whether people don't like him, unlike Jerry, who is more worried about his reputation than actually fighting for the people of Kansas.

Since when is Republican a synonym for Conservative? There are liberal Republicans and there are conservative Democrats. Let me also add I think it's insane to label one's entire political philosophy with either "liberal" or "conservative." I would hope most people's political thoughts are a little more complex than one or the other.

My point was that Todd demonstrated a lack of loyalty to his Party. If the GOP remains a home for only right-wing conservatives, the party will never return to power. The GOP needs to reach out to moderates, and especially young people if it's ever going to retain power. The GOP only briefly returned to majorities in both houses in the 1990s by reaching out to Moderates. Look at the Congress-members from New England in the 90s, about half were Republicans. Now virtually none are. And the GOP in Washington is a pathetic minority party with a grim future.

What did the Conservative candidate in the New York race do? He split the vote, and allowed yet another Democrat to enter Congress. Republicans cannot divide, they must unite in order to prevent President Obama and the Democrats from controlling every aspect of our federal government. Tiahrt's endorsement probably had no effect on the NY race. But Tiahrt’s endorsement demonstrated that he places ideology ahead of pragmatism. This troubles me. Sometimes you have compromise, or else nothing will ever get done.

Anonymous- Although I do not work nor volunteer for Todd, I do support his winning campaign. Again, you have demonstrated your lack of political understanding regarding this race. Because most Kansans understand the dynamics of this race, I will not explain it. It is a unique race and having spent over 35 years being involved in political campaigns ranging from local, state, and national levels, it is one that Todd will win. Kansans are searching for a candidate who is honest, who will continue to fight the good fight, one who will charge forward, one who has a moral compass and a candidate who will be himself. Todd has illustrated all of these and as people continue to learn about Todd, they will recognize Todd as the leader who demonstrates these qualities and he will be the one they choose. They are not looking for a candidate who has to change in an attempt to win votes – Jerry has clearly illustrated he is willing to be dishonest with Kansans by his attempt to become conservative. Jerry also does not charge toward the fight and show courage. Anonymous, is it poor english or poor grammar? Grammar is the body of rules describing the properties of the english language.

I suppose it was poor English because you did not follow "the body of rules describing the properties of the English language." That being said, I probably should not have started the post with that as my underlying point was that I do not want another bloody primary. However, it does not really matter because either candidate will smoke the Dem like a cheap cigar.
