Talk around T-Town
SRK had the opportunity to talk to some "power players" on both ends of the political spectrum the other day and heard some interesting comments regarding state legislative races and inside political moves.
1. Governor Kathleen Sebelius is trying to funnel money away from Minority Leader Dennis McKinney and into the hands of Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson. This is no surprise, as Parkinson is the "chosen" successor, and McKinney has always been a hitch in the Sebelius agenda. The talk is, the Governor is making it clear to donors and lobbyists that she wants McKinney out of House Leadership, and strapped for cash.
2. There is also talk about The House Democratic Campaign Committee targeting two somewhat "swing" districts in Johnson County: State Represenative Kevin Yoder (R-20) and State Representative Terrie Huntington (R-25). This is somwhat puzzling, as Yoder and Huntington are seen as ferocious fundraisers and pretty good at working their districts. We can only hope this is their plan, as it will sap resources elsewhere and garner little traction in these districts.

The part about Sebelius trying to dump McKinney seems exceedingly far fetched. "Both ends of the political spectrum," indeed. Been talking with Jim Barone again, SRK?
Is it time once more for our webmaster to pee in the bottle? I know he's been thirsty, but please DON'T drink the bong water!

Say what you want but this has been news inside the Democratic Party throughout last legislative session. You might want to talk with some of the lobbyists who have the right information. Some of the same people who have made these statements about Sebelius going after McKinney are the same one's who stated a month before it was announced that John Moore was out and Mark Parkinson would be the new lieutenent governor.

I don't know why Democrats are focusing upon Huntington but I am sure the focus on Yoder is the fact that talk is Yoder is looking to pursue higher office in the future.

What a waste of resources. Yoder and Huntington are both great JoCo moderates that represent their districts extremely well. Yoder's opponent is a complete nobody and both of them have plenty of cash in the bank.

Rep. McKinney helps the Governor look far better than she would, otherwise. He brings a real faith and a genuine set of beliefs into a party not known for such. Does anyone think Kathleen actually reads the Bible? I tend to see her as a blue-blooded Pharisee, although I don't think she knows what the word 'Pharisee' means.

Maybe the Dems have nowhere else to go since many of their other candidates are college students or retreads. Metsker is their top target but his name recognition and his wife's long service on the school board will bring him through. Bill Roy wanted to brag about numbers rather than a few strong candidates.

The democrats know Yoder is weak. He may very well win this year, but he is running out of political capital in both the moderate and conservative wings of his party. He enjoys an (undeserved) reputation for being 'moderate' and representing his district well, when this simply is not the case. He is definitely the poster boy for "style" over "substance".
As for Bill Roy - I'm a yellow-dog democrat, but the comment regarding him wanting to brag about numbers is exactly right. The guy's a fool and would probably consider registering a corpse to run as a place holder if he thought he could get away with it. I guess the name of his father continues to carry him and offer him some capital with the Dem's, but this too is undeserved, and the party would be better off if he'd disappear.

Yoder is just like the other 'young turks' who thought they could take over the Kansas house. Where are they now ... gone!
Kevin may likely be the next to go.

Yoder will win easily and a lot of younger legislators can't afford to stay; they need to move on with careers earning money and raising families.

In case this was missed by some, newsflash;the Republicans also have a college student running in Crawford County, and imagine this, a college sophomore running on the Libertarian ticket. The way I see it, these young people grew up watching our country being demoralized in the eyes of the world under the current administration so they are taking a more active interest in politics and policies. To me it shows a major step in the correct direction. Too many older folks running the show can't be a good thing, many tend to be set in their ways and need to open their minds up, they might learn or shall I say evolve? These students are also faced with a mountain of debt when they do complete their degree, that is thanks to NCLB, cuts by the Fed. Govt. and let us not forget that Kansas took the largest hit of all. The new GI bill that Bush congratulated his administration and John McCain on was so hilarious, given the fact that Bush threatened to veto if the bill did pass. Oh and John McCain opposed the bill, he being the only senator not to vote that day, with the exception of Ted Kennedy who is fighting for his life currently. I thought that Republicans were the party of God and country; I guess giving their soldiers a helping hand when they return from war is a bit too much to ask for from McCain. Considering the military is reduced to taking high school drop outs and those with felony records, it must mean that they don't deserve a second change after going to battle for the Bush administration in a war of choice.

Part of the reason that Sibileus made such an ass out of herself at Greensburg was because she was so mad that McKinney, for good reason, was getting such good press. She was trying to get the nationals to pay attention to her. Instead, she should have stayed in New Orleans (or wherever she really was those three days).

Actually, thinking that "Sibileus" made an ass of herself at Greensburg is delusional rewriting of history. (Kanzan is about as good at reading minds as he is at spelling his governor's name.)

Sebelius did not listen to jazz instead of going to GreensburgBush administration officials have been putting out the word that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was two days late getting to Greensburg after the tornado struck because she was attending a jazz festival in New Orleans, columnist Robert Novak reported. But that’s not the real story, said Nicole Corcoran, the governor’s press secretary.
Yes, Sebelius was in New Orleans with her family when the tornado hit that Friday evening. But she was notified that night about the tornado, and she and her staff in Kansas immediately began trying to assess the damage. When the scope of the disaster became clear, they began making arrangements for her return.
Sebelius didn’t attend any of the jazz festival and left her family in New Orleans, flying back Saturday afternoon using a plane arranged by Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco. Sebelius didn’t go to Greensburg until Sunday, Corcoran said, because Kansas National Guard Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting told her it would be best to wait until then. That way she wouldn’t disrupt ongoing rescue efforts.
You can’t control where you are when an emergency hits, Corcoran noted. And she said that Sebelius wouldn’t have gone to Greensburg any sooner if she had been in Topeka when the storm struck.
"We absolutely did the right thing," Corcoran said.

Frank,
Didn't President Bush get hammered by Democrats for not showing up in New Orleans sooner despite the same reasons given .... not wanting to take police off the streets and doing rescue efforts in order to provide security for him.
But of course that was the President and he does nothing correctly in Democrats eyes while Queen Kathleen can do no wrong.

Nothing quite as gripping as a bit of "Anonymous-authored" historial revisionism.
Hurricane Katrina formed on 8/23, with Bush on vacation. It was to be the 3rd worst hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. By 8/26 there were predictions of disaster, winds of 175 mph. On 8/27 Blanco asked Bush for a declaration of emergency. On 8/28 Bush returned her phone call. On 8/29 Katrina made landfall at New Orleans. Bush is in Arizona, going to John McCain's birthday party and telling seniors how wonderful the budget-busting Medicare Part D is going to be (if they own stock in pharmaceutical corporations). 8/30. Bush continuing with vacation, flies to California to pick up a guitar with the presidential seal from country singer Mark Willis. 8/31 On way back to DC Bush flies over Gulf Coast. 9/2 Mobile, Alabama airport. Bush: "I'm here to comfort people. Again, I want to thank you all for -- and, Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." 9/12 Brown resigns. 9/15 Bush stages photo op in Jackson Square, N.O. after joking about partying there during his heavy drinking days. November: Brown stops receiving paychecks.

Sebelius could have made it back to Kansas much sooner if she knew she could do some fundraising with a plane load of her "friends' onboard at the same time or the Governor's plane would have went to get her if she were going to a sporting event.

I guess its too much to expect reality-based comments from anonymous posters.

Why does it take two days to get back from New Orleans when you have your own state-provided plane?
Reply to this
Because she didn't have the plane in New Orleans. Greensburg happened in the evening. Blanco lent her the Louisiana state plane to fly home to Topeka the next day, not "two days." This has all been covered extensively in the press.

Apologies. The SRK site delayed posting for a few minutes and I thought it had lost my post, so tried posting again.

Yeah, isn't it wonderful that smart young people are being driven out because they can't afford to do the job?
It's bad enough most young people don't care about government to begin with, but we can't even keep the ones who do get involved.

Why does know won hear seam to care that Sebelius went to Bilderberg in VA and Istanbul in the past two years, being vetted by the global masters to be the Dims VP and in clear violation of the Logan Act, which forbids elected officials from meeting in secret with foreign agents or officials?

"Bilderberg?" Eeek! "...global masters?" Omigawd! "...meeting in secret?" "...foreign agents."
If things aren't silly enough, sounds like a LaRouchie is posting. Do you know about Prescott Bush and Hitler? Wow!
Speaking of meeting with "foreign agents," I missed the 60 Minutes rerun. Did Doug Feith get asked about his #2 Larry Franklin?

Rep. Dennis McKinney will always get better press than the Governor because McKinney is the real deal. He combines a bright intelligence with his education and a knowledgeable Christian faith. To someone out there: allow Rep. McKinney to speak at the Kansas Prayer Breakfast INSTEAD of Kathleen!

Yoder will be fine. Don't know about Huntington since she folded during the coal bill. Sibeelious had Parkinson talk a lot of people into running but isn't coming through with the assist.
