Straw Poll Results
With over 400 votes counted, here are the results:
Kansas 2nd District
Jim Ryun 63%
Lynn Jenkins 37%
Presidential
Rudy Guiliani 31%
Fred Thompson 24%
Mike Huckabee 11%
John McCain 9%
Mitt Romney 8%
Ron Paul 7%
Sam Brownback 5%
Alan Keyes 2%
Duncan Hunter 2%
Tom Tancredo 1%
If anyone voted on a comment - that's fine - we counted it as long as it didn't have a duplicate IP address. Those votes were too few to drasicatlly alter the poll, but we still wanted every regular reader to partcipate.
We decided to keep the "view limit" on the poll for a reason. We wanted to see which campaign would organize their net-roots around obstacles (like waking up at 3 AM to vote in this thing). We want to see who "wanted it" more.
Our straw polls are designed to explore which campaigns have a stronger net-roots movement. We are NOT trying to estimate public opinion.
(Note: If you don't like the poll, that's fine. However, please keep profanity of the blog. There are two IP addresses that have been blocked)
(Note: The view limit was in place for both the presidential and the 2nd district. Obviously, there were more votes and hits on the 2nd district race)

Perfect! Another rigged vote, brought to you by....
THE REPUBLICANS!
Applause, applause, applause.

I'm glad SRK had a view limit on the poll...these internet polls need some type of rules and boundaries to ensure that the best campaign wins
Reply to this
The vote isn't rigged and that is just a stupid point by the democratic poster.
Freaking Daily Kos internet polls always have some loony lefty winning and never reflect the front-runners. Stay red is different and I like it.
The fact that Guliani (moderate) and Ryun (conservative) won shows that this poll might actually show who really has the better internet movement and campaign structure.

they didn't limit votes on the Presidential poll, just on the congressional one. they're just blowing smoke.

(they haven't blocked any IP addresses...if they tried, they don't know how...)

What a crappy excuse for a poll. If you want an accurate poll you don't limit the number of votes in a day. Now it would be one thing to say each day you can vote between 6:00am to noon each day for a week. By placing a limit on the number of votes in a day ..... you've made the 2nd District poll invalid.
Reply to this
why did you only do it on the 2nd district poll? this doesn't make any sense
Reply to this
I guess it tells you something when Sam Brownback can't even get above 5% of the vote in his home state.

I am a former Ryun staffer and still current supporter but this poll was meaningless!
Reply to this
Not true. It proves that if the primary election unexpectantly shuts down at about 8:30 AM after allowing his friends and family from D.C. to vote, Jim Ryun is likely to win by a substantial margin.
Reply to this
If you are a former Ryun staffer and you are still a supporter then you have much bigger problems then just a worthless poll. Very few former staffers are supporting Ryun this time. Pretty telling I think.
Reply to this
That's hogwash. Virtually all of Ryun's former staff are supporting him. You're making stuff up.
Reply to this
Clearly, it was not a "scientific poll".

WHO CARES ABOUT STRAW POLLS?
I don't although it was interesting to see that Ryun and Guilani won. It shows that those campaigns are working too hard on meaningless things
I agree with SRK about the limiting of views and votes. IT is a good way to keep it from being rigged

RIDICULOUS! It was a mistake and they just won't fess up to it.

also, if this is true:
"ur straw polls are designed to explore which campaigns have a stronger net-roots movement. We are NOT trying to estimate public opinion."
why wasn't the presidential side also limited?
Reply to this
Allow me to interpret the numbers for the presidential poll:
Moderate 31%
Neo-Con 62%
Truly conservative: 7%
Moving at light speed toward an arse kicking in 2008: 93%

Fairness disclosure
By conservative I mean conserve the constitutional republic, not conserve the neo-con status quo that is killing the constitutional republic.

Rudy has surprising strength in a variety of locations that would seem, on the surface, strange for a guy with his ideological history.
He is kind of falling in all of our first in the nation polls but I think is showing significant if somewhat subterranean organizational strength that could land him the no. 1 spot here in Iowa.
Reply to this
Rudy is running as a conservative, especially on national security and taxes/spending.

someone who supports abortion rights and gay marriage will never win the republican nomination for president (and get elected)

Prochoice GOP Presidents: Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George HW Bush
Prolife GOP Presidents: Ronald Reagan, GW Bush
Prochoice GOP Presidents outnumber prolife GOP Presidents 2-to-1. And, the great Reagan that prolifers loved so much appointed prochoice court justices and took a prochoice running mate.
On the Democrat side - how many Democrat Presidents have been prochoice? Just one - Clinton. Kennedy, LBJ and Carter were all prolife.

that was a really interesting post- thanks for the info!

Didn't most of the blogosphere have Canfield winning the primary for Governor, then Barnett beating Sebelius?
I'll wait for the real campaign to start, thanks anyway.

I understand that the Ryun campaign e-mailed requests to participate in the vote to its supporter list, and the Jenkins campaign did not. Was this the case, and if so, why bother to publish the "results?"
Reply to this
Now I am hearing that Jim Ryun actually used these poll results in a fundraising message ...... what a joke. Jim your getting awful desperate early when you start quoting worthless unscientific polls.
Is this where he got his polls from that showed him ahead in his last election.?
Jim having your family and friends vote in an online poll that limits who gets to vote doesn't mean squat. Do you have your son running your campaign again?
Reply to this
Ryun WAS ahead in the polls until few weeks before the election. But the White House didn't send Air Force I and II to the rescue because they weren't worried.
Election day showed they had reason to be. Even with the Libertarian vote (hard to do when you think the next best thing to the drug war is the Iraq war) on his side, he wouldn't have won. Nancy got 50.6%.
On the other hand the WH math wasn't all that good either ("Is our children learning?") They steered $90,000 to the Green Party of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania to get them a statewide ballot line so they could save two-term incumbent Santorum.
Philadelphia's version of Phill went down by Phill amounts: 59% to 41%

Speaking of George Herbert Walker Bush:
What if basically all racial-minority people would subscribe to the interpretations that George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes while he was the President of the United States?
It will eventually come out: it is only a matter of time.

must say, as very much as I enjoyed reading what you had to express, I couldnt help but lose interest after a although. Its as should you had a excellent grasp on the topic matter, but you forgot to consist of your readers. Possibly you ought to consider this from far more than a single angle. Or possibly you shouldnt generalise so significantly. Its greater in case you think about what others might have to express instead of just going for any gut reaction on the topic. Think about adjusting your own believed method and giving other people who might read this the benefit with the doubt.
